Initial Ideas

I used Pinterest to collate a mood board for each of my magazine ideas. 

For my first one - I chose to do a very clean and calming aesthetic, as this is currently trending, with the 'clean girl aesthetic'. This will appeal to my 16 - 25 audience as it will be similar to other content that they are seeing online and interacting with. I think I will go for mainly pastel colours or I will go in the other direction and chose some bright ones (as this is more different and could be seem more exciting to my audience). 

For my second magazine - I have chosen a very chic tennis style, with lots of greens and blues. It will be sort of a throwback to the 2024 film 'Challengers' which caused the uprising of 'tennis chic'. I will perhaps use other props like bags or running trainers to build the narrative for my magazine. This will be appealing to a ABC1 market, as tennis (and tennis clubs) are seen as more for upper class young people.

PEERS AND TEACHERS

After doing my pitch to my class and teachers, I was given some quick and simple feedback based on my ideas and how I can improve in order to fulfil the brief best. For example, I need to focus on finding concrete examples of intertextuality that I can add to my pitch and my magazine. Lots of my peers enjoyed the idea of Pilates and the 'clean girl' trend - this information I can use as market research and ensure that I can appeal to my audience and provide content that they will enjoy.

Trial Photography

 I liked how the shoes were contrasting bright colours – as this is appealing to my target demographic. I also like the ‘messier’ style as it is unconventional to see in a health magazine and that is what I am aiming to achieve.  I like the idea of using Adidas shoes as some part of my magazine as it seems like a cheap way to make intertextual links that will be easily recognised by the 16 - 25 age range. 

I like the candid aspect of the image as it seems more natural and fun – this is hopefully the vibe that I would like to try and convey. I don’t like the green grassy background as it seems too unusual for this image. Next time, I would try a similar angle but with a white or colourful background as it will be more visually appealing and look more conventional for a true health magazine.

 Intertextuality ideas: 

- Link to Challengers (2024) - either a shot in the contents or a direct reference (I may try to do an image like this as a direct reference). This includes her looking over the glasses

- Cover star wearing Nike- sports brand , easily recognisable and value transference

- Mention reformer pilates trend (hot girl walk/ hot girl summer) 

- Mention strava - running app recognised by runners 

- Have 'namaste' or lotus flowers somewhere 

- Mention 'Karate Kid' to do with motivation and working hard 

-Mention 'Rocky' or 'Creed'

-Lululemon clothes 

-Wimbledon reference - perhaps having a graphic of the scoreboard in the cover

My contacts 

These are some of my original photoshoot images - I got around 300 for each cover. 

I like how there is the contrast between the indoor and outdoor shots and I think this will help to distinguish between the two while keeping the branding. 

I was able to represent different social groups as one of my models is half Chinese. I was also trying to represent different sections of the age range of the audience, as my model for cover 1 is 19, and so part of the middle section of the demographic. While my model for cover 2 is 17 and aiming to represent the younger end of the spectrum.

Extra Images 

I filmed clips for my 30 second video, which may be based on a day in the life of the sports model. I will use the model for my second cover, as my first model is going off to uni soon. 

I also took some different images which I will use for the contents section of my magazines. These are more dynamic and less 'cover worthy' but I like how they show the tennis and sporty aesthetic, whilst still showcasing my model.

Colour Picker for ideas

I used a colour picker website to try and decide a colour scheme that I could use throughout my magazine covers, content pages and website. This will help me to bring in a sense of branding, and this will help me to tie all pieces together. I can't decide which last colour works best for the brand.
